Company’s decision to sponsor event is ‘testament to the work of colleagues in the city’
Colleagues from Bupa will be taking to the streets to help celebrate Coventry Pride on 9-10 June. With Bupa being announced as an official partner of the festival this year, colleagues across the city will be involved in the parade. They’ll also be spreading the word of DiverCity – a diversity and inclusion network for local businesses, set up by Bupa colleagues.
It’s the first time that Bupa has sponsored a Pride event. What’s more, the decision to support it in Coventry was taken to recognise local colleagues who’ve gone above and beyond in promoting diversity both in the office and the wider community.
In 2016 Bupa colleagues in Coventry established the DiverCity network to help increase people’s awareness and understanding of all areas of diversity from LGBT+ to mental health and disability. Working with a range of local businesses – including Barclays, Dentons, Mazars, Network Rail and PwC – DiverCity runs regular networking events designed to help employers provide a supportive working environment for all colleagues. Outside the city, the team is also working to establish networks in Manchester, London, Staines, Leeds, Bristol and Brighton.
David Hynam, CEO Bupa UK, was recently recognised as one of the top 10 Global leaders in the LGBT + Executives List by the Financial Times.
Speaking of Bupa’s support of Coventry Pride, he said: “It’s an honour to be an official partner of the parade and the theme ‘Be You’ aligns with the approach we take across Bupa UK to ensure we’re an inclusive organisation where everyone is free to be themselves.”
Angela Kay, Product Consultant for Bupa, was behind DiverCity. She added: “DiverCity was founded in 2016 to drive forward diversity and inclusion, not just within Bupa but in our local communities. It’s about increasing awareness and understanding of different backgrounds and cultures, while encouraging people to be their best self at work every day. On a personal level, I’m passionate about engaging with our local communities and it’s brilliant to see that Bupa’s behind it too. Knowing that I’ve played a part in that makes me very proud.”
Coventry Pride, which was first held in 2015, is an annual celebration of the area’s LGBT+ community, and will take to the city’s streets on 9th and 10th June 2018. The free event is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the city, and colleagues from Bupa will be encouraging the celebrations as they take part in the walking parade on Saturday 9th of June. This year’s main festival will be located in University Square, opposite Coventry Cathedral with additional family fun in Broadgate Square, Coventry city centre.

This year’s ‘Be You’ message is about encouraging people to feel comfortable in their own skin, and likewise accepting of others. As an organisation that’s been promoting this across the city, we’re delighted to have Bupa as a partner for this year’s celebrations.”
Bupa has around 100 colleagues working in the city, predominantly based in the offices on Courtaulds Way. It also runs Bupa Dental Care Coventry, which employs a team of eight, as well as providing health assessments and treatments across the midlands via its Solihull health centre.
As a registered charity, Coventry Pride relies on partnerships and public donations to help keep the event free to attend for everyone. In addition to the Pride celebrations, Bupa’s support will help the charity to hold other events and activities, including plans to mark LGBT History month, Transgender Day of Remembrance and World Aids Day.
